United Kingdom - Uniting with the United Kingdom
Article Date: 2007-11-06
The United Kingdom consists of England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. The climate of Britain is variable from day to day. Weather is generally cool to mild with frequent cloud and rain, but occasional settled spells of weather occur in all seasons.
The UK is a hive of activity and productivity. It was the world's most powerful country during the 19th and early 20th century, but the economic costs of two world wars and the fall of its empire in the latter half of the 20th century diminished its leading role in global affairs. However, the UK retains major economic, cultural, military and political influence today and is a nuclear power with the second highest defence spending in the world. It holds a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council and is a member of the G8, NATO, the European Union and the Commonwealth of Nations. The UK boasts leading trading power, economic boom, intensive, highly mechanized, and efficient agriculture and a hefty labour force. The UK economy is one of the strongest in Europe, with inflation, interest rates, and unemployment remaining low. The government has also focused on accelerating the improvement of education, transport, and health services, at a cost in higher taxes and a widening public deficit.
Visitors to Britain are often surprised by the long summer days, which are a consequence of the northerly latitude; in the north of Scotland in midsummer the day is eighteen hours long and twilight lasts all night. Conversely, winter days are short. Nevertheless the lengthy days make the UK very attractive to investors.
With regards to purchasing property, a ten percent deposit is required on exchange of contracts. If one cannot afford the full amount one can negotiate for a reduced deposit.
Renting and sharing rented property is very popular as the property boom has made it more of a necessity than a choice. Important factors to consider when renting or purchasing a property is location, proximity of property to work, schools, shops and transportation systems, as well as the availability of private or secure parking, as crime, although not as high as certain African countries, is definitely a consideration.
